Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father and we are seated with Him in heavenly places. What a thought!
Because we are united with God, through Christ Jesus, we get to live out His will here on earth. We’re given this position, this power, this authority to rule on earth. And as rulers on earth, we are to rule and operate as Jesus did – not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit. We don’t rule as earthly kings and queens do, but by love.
Have you noticed that rulers don’t live the same way everybody else does? They can’t. With leadership comes authority and responsibility. Good leaders are held to a higher standard. Bad leaders dominate, but good leaders rule. We’re called to rule this earth by God’s love.
So, what does it mean to take up your God-given authority? Right ruling requires that we do four things:
1. We rule as mature leaders, leading by love and not dominance.
2. We rule with the right attitude. Like Christ we should be willing to lay down our lives for others.
3. We remain committed to transformation. When we’re led by the Spirit we can expect to become more and more Christlike.
4. We live righteous lives, just like Jesus did. Again, this is done not through our own strength but through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Lest we take our God-given authority for granted, I want to remind us that it is through the unmerited grace of God that we hold this position. Grace made all this available. Without grace, without Jesus, we have no righteousness, no authority, no hope, but with grace, all things are possible, and we have all authority to see God’s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.
“For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.”
